JOB DESCRIPTION
Job Title: Fire Lieutenant (Career) Reports to: Deputy Chief
Dept/Div: Fire Direct Reports: Firefighters
Pay Grade: F8 FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
JOB PURPOSE: A Waukee Fire Lieutenant supervises a team of firefighters while leading and participating
in all phases of firefighting and emergency medical operations.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Leads and directs the firefighters through selection, orientation, training, performance management and
discipline according to standard operating procedures, City policy and departmental rules and regulations.
2. Provides first-line supervision of an assigned shift. Performs suppression and patient care related activities
in compliance with department Standard Operating Guidelines and directives
3. Provides and ensures crew provides appropriate advanced life support to patients on the scene as well as
during transport in addition to completing required documentation; all to department expectations.
4. Creates and conducts drills in all phases of firefighting and emergency medical services.
5. Disseminates administrative and policy directions to staff and ensures their compliance with City policy and
departmental rules and regulations.
6. Observes and participates in project work and makes decisions as to quality of work and whether it meets
departmental standards.
7. Assumes "Command" (Incident Management System) of the emergency scene until formally relieved
through transfer of command. Supervises firefighters, firefighting teams, medics, and rescue teams during
emergency operations.
8. Reviews and recommends procedural changes, needed equipment, and maintenance.
9. Supervises the safe response of emergency apparatus. Encourages and promotes compliance with safety
rules and the use of safety equipment.
10. Supervises and performs life-safety inspections, community relations activities, and other fire related
activities.
11. Performs other duties or assumes other responsibilities as apparent or assigned.

10. Work as a team leader and/or commander under stress caused by emergencies, danger and criticism.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. High School graduate. Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree preferred.
2. A minimum of 3 years’ experience with the Waukee Fire Department required.
3. Must possess a valid Iowa Driver’s License and meet the requirements of the City's motor vehicle policy.

4. Certifications: Firefighter II (IFSAC), Fire Instructor I (IFSAC), Fire Officer I (IFSAC), Hazardous Materials-
Operations (IFSAC), Paramedic certification issued by the Iowa Department of Public Health, CPR, ACLS
or equivalent), and PALS (or equivalent), FEMA IS-100, IS-200 (or IS-195), and IS-700.
a. ICS-300, ICS-400, and ICS-800 required within 12 months.
5. Knowledge of Waukee Fire Department and City of Waukee policies and Standard Operating Guidelines;
understanding of local and national fire codes, building construction, and fire behavior; knowledge of
appropriate training standards; knowledge of hazardous materials response; knowledge of emergency
driving techniques.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
1. Able to pass the Waukee Physical Ability Evaluation at any time during employment.
2. Able to perform all essential functions of the position while wearing required protective equipment.
3. Able to operate and use all fire department equipment and apparatus.
4. Responsive to visual and verbal alarms and other indications of distress.
5. Able to effectively communicate orally (in person and over the telephone) and in writing (using electronic
devices and handwritten) in English with other employees and the community.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
1. Position requires outdoor work where heat, cold, precipitation, and the results of weather and nature may
be encountered.
2. Will be exposed to darkness and poor lighting, fumes/odors, isolation, moving machinery, noise, visual
strain, unprotected heights, wearing a respirator and self-contained breathing apparatus, working on
uneven ground, mechanical hazards, biological hazards, medical hazards, electrical hazards, traffic
hazards, possible explosion, and bodily injury.
3. Will be required to wear a respirator and self-contained breathing apparatus.
4. Position includes significant workplace pressure.
5. Standard work hours must be flexible, will include days, evenings, over nights and weekends, may be
greater than 40 hours per week, and may be called to report to duty at any time.
6. To successfully fulfill the essential functions of this position, employee must maintain standard work hours
within Waukee Public Safety building.
7. There is no residency requirement for this position.
