HomeMy WebLinkAboutFire - Inspector (Career)City of Waukee JOB DESCRIPTION Job Title: Fire Inspector (Career) Dept/Div: Fire Union Status: Represented - CWA Pay Grade: GS-14 Reports to: Captain Direct Reports: None FLSA Status: Non -Exempt JOB PURPOSE: The Fire Inspector enhances community fire protection and safety by creating and enforcing national fire codes and local amendments, and teaching fire prevention programs. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (Order of Essential Functions does not indicate importance of functions.) 1. Performs life -safety inspections, community relations activities, public education, and other emergency response related activities. 2. Conducts field investigations and responds to alleged violations of various fire codes issuing city citations or summons for uncorrected violations. 3. Conducts inspections of new construction and renovation projects, ensuring correct interpretation and enforcement of established fire codes, ordinances, and regulations. 4. Works with developers/builders to ensure compliance with proper codes. 5. Conducts plan reviews of new construction and renovation projects, including sprinkler systems design and specifications and coordinates with the City's Chief Building Official on final acceptance of building plans. 6. Responsible for certifying required alarm tests, sprinkler system tests, fixed system tests, fire pump acceptance tests and related activities. 7. Ensures all inspection activities are properly documented in the fire department's record management system. 8. Responds to fire and rescue calls as needed or directed and performs within the directives, policies, SOG's, and protocols of the department. 9. Performs other duties or assumes other responsibilities as apparent or assigned. SUCCESS FACTORS: 1. Operates with the safety of themselves, their co-workers, and the general public in mind at all times. QUALIFICATIONS: 1. High School graduate. Associate's or Bachelor's degree preferred. 2. Must possess a valid Iowa Driver's License and meet the requirements of the City's motor vehicle policy. 3. Certifications: Firefighter II (IFSAC), Fire Inspector (IFSAC), Fire Instructor I (IFSAC), Hazardous Materials Operations (IFSAC), Fire Inspector I (IFSAC), Current Paramedic certification issued by the Iowa Department of Public Health, Current Healthcare Provider CPR, ACLS, and PEEP or PALS. Knowledge of Waukee Fire Department policies and SOG; local and national fire codes, building construction, and fire behavior; appropriate training standards; hazardous materials response; emergency driving techniques. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: 1. Able to pass the Waukee Physical Agility Test at any time during employment. 2. Able to perform all essential functions of the position while wearing required protective equipment. 3. Able to operate and use all fire department equipment and apparatus. 4. Responsive to visual and verbal alarms and other indications of distress. 5. Able to effectively communicate orally (in person and over the telephone) and in writing (using electronic devices and handwritten) in English with other employees and the community. WORKING CONDITIONS: 1. Position requires outdoor work where heat, cold, precipitation, and the results of weather and nature may be encountered. 2. Will be exposed to darkness and poor lighting, fumes/odors, isolation, moving machinery, noise, visual strain, unprotected heights, wearing a respirator and self-contained breathing apparatus, working on uneven ground, mechanical hazards, biological hazards, medical hazards, electrical hazards, traffic hazards, possible explosion, and bodily injury. 3. Will be required to wear a respirator and self-contained breathing apparatus. 4. Position includes significant work place pressure. 5. Standard work hours must be flexible, will include days, evenings, over nights and weekends, may be greater than 40 hours per week, and may be called to report to duty at any time. 6. To successfully fulfill the essential functions of this position, employee must maintain standard work hours within Waukee Public Safety building. 7.
