JOB DESCRIPTION
Job Title: Fire Chief Reports to: City Administrator
Dept/Div: Fire Direct Reports: Deputy Fire Chief, Fire Marshal, Admin
Pay Grade: D1 Assistant
FLSA Status: Exempt – Executive
JOB PURPOSE: The Fire Chief holds full responsibility to plan, develop, implement and coordinate the
ongoing activities of the Waukee Fire Department including fire suppression, investigation,
prevention, and emergency medical services.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Leads and directs the Fire Department staff through selection, orientation, training, performance
management and discipline according to standard operating procedures, City policy and departmental rules
and regulations.
2. Develops and directs Fire Department policies, procedures, regulations, programs, systems, operations,
goals and objectives.
3. Oversees the financial aspects of the Fire Department operations, including accounting for department
revenues, approving expenditures, keeping accurate inventory and preparing the annual Capital
Improvement Plan (CIP) and budget.
4. Develops an organizational structure within the Department to ensure prompt, efficient and effective fire,
rescue and ambulance services.
5. Oversees fire code adoption and enforcement, and purchase/maintenance of vehicles and equipment.
6. Annually reviews, updates and obtains approval for the township fire service contracts.
7. Submits federal and state reports as required.
8. Coordinates training program to ensure the Department has an adequate number of trained and certified
personnel to meet the fire/rescue needs of the community.
9. Responds to fire and rescue calls as needed or directed and performs suppression, rescue and ventilation
in compliance with department Standard Operating Guidelines (SOGs) and directives.
10. Performs other duties or assumes other responsibilities as apparent or assigned.

8. Contribute to overall City effectiveness by providing critical staff support to task forces and by participating,
as necessary, in assisting all other teams.
9. Utilize a high level of conflict resolution skills with staff, community, elected officials and all stakeholders.

10. Attentive to the City’s standards for customer service, accuracy, quality, efficiency and all City policies and
procedures ensuring that all work performed and all staff members meet those standards while exhibiting
consistent treatment of all staff.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Bachelor’s Degree in Fire Administration, Fire Science or related discipline. .
2. Demonstrated experience in firefighting, Emergency medical Services (EMS) and ambulance
transportation in a combination fire department (career and part-time)
3. Ten (10) years experience in a combination fire department (career and part-time) with progressive
responsibility levels, including five (5) years supervisory experience.
4. Must possess a valid Iowa Driver License and meet the requirements of the City’s motor vehicle policy.
5. Certifications: Firefighter II (IFSAC), Fire Instructor I (IFSAC), Fire Officer I (IFSAC), Hazardous Materials-
Operations (IFSAC), Current Paramedic certification issued by the Iowa Department of Public Health,
Current Healthcare Provider CPR, ACLS, and PEEP or PALS. FEMA IS-100 and IS-200 (or IS-195), ICS-
300, ICS-400, IS-700, and ICS-800.
6. Understanding of local and national fire codes, building construction, and fire behavior; knowledge of
appropriate training standards; knowledge of hazardous materials response; knowledge of emergency
driving techniques.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
1. Able to pass the Waukee Physical Agility Test at any time during employment.
2. Able to perform all essential functions of the position while wearing required protective equipment.
3. Able to operate and use all fire department equipment and apparatus.
4. Responsive to visual and verbal alarms and other indications of distress.
5. Able to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of directors, staff, colleagues,
elected officials and the general public.
6. Able to effectively communicate orally (in person and over the telephone) and in writing (using electronic
devices and handwritten) in English with other employees and the community.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
1. Position requires outdoor work where heat, cold, precipitation, and the results of weather and nature may
be encountered.
2. Will be exposed to darkness and poor lighting, fumes/odors, isolation, moving machinery, noise, visual
strain, unprotected heights, wearing a respirator and self-contained breathing apparatus, working on
uneven ground, mechanical hazards, biological hazards, medical hazards, electrical hazards, traffic
hazards, possible explosion, and bodily injury.
3. Will be exposed to significant work place pressure.
4. Standard work hours must be flexible and include evenings and weekends.
5. To successfully fulfill the essential functions of this position, employee must maintain standard work hours
within Waukee Public Safety Building.
6. Shall reside within the Waukee City limits within one (1) year of hire date and shall maintain residency
throughout tenure.
