HomeMy WebLinkAboutLIB - Adult Services Librarian Adult Services Librarian Page 1 Library Board Approved 01-13-15 Revised 4-8-15, 6-21-16, 10-2021, 4-2022, 7-2023, 2-2024 City of Waukee JOB DESCRIPTION Job Title: Adult Services Librarian Reports to: Assistant Director - Library Dept/Div: Library Direct Reports: None Pay Grade: L33 FLSA Status: Non-Exempt JOB PURPOSE: The Adult Services Librarian (ASL) coordinates adult and senior programs, outreach, and services, manages collection development for adults and seniors, and answers reference questions. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (Order of Essential Functions does not indicate importance of functions.) 1. Works with the Assistant Director - Library and implements a strategic vision and implementation plan for the adult collections, programming, and services. Coordinates adult and senior programs and services. 2. Provides quality customer service, readers' advisory, new patron orientation and ongoing patron education, and answers reference questions. 3. Collection development and management of adult collection by planning, selecting, ordering and weeding assigned materials in accordance with library policies and budget. 4. Evaluates and suggests annual departmental budget; manages and complies with budget allotment. 5. Provides adult outreach and promotes adult materials and readers advisory services. 6. Maintains an attractive and functional adult area including promotional materials and displays. 7. Develops adult-oriented content for website and social media outlets. 8. Manages Art Gallery scheduling, contacts and promotions. 9. Compiles statistics and reports as directed. 10. Performs other duties or assumes other responsibilities as apparent or assigned. Acknowledges and accepts the Library's mission, respects the Library's confidentiality regulations, and maintains the integrity of the Waukee Public Library. 3. Maintains knowledge of current holdings and library resources, both print and electronic. 4. Ability to conduct a reference interview and be able to answer reference questions with authority and tenacity to meet patron needs. 5. Be comfortable working in close proximity to all age categories. 6. Continually seeks and participates in opportunities for continuing education and professional growth. 7. Improves the effectiveness and efficiency of all library operations with positive and creative approaches to challenges. 8. Demonstrates sound time-management skills by effectively and efficiently organizing, prioritizing, and completing multiple assignments in a timely manner. 9. Has a professional understanding of librarianship. 10. Understand and internalize the importance of seeking resolution to problems and concerns by bringing them to the direct attention of supervisor in a timely manner. 11. Be attentive to the City's and the Library's standards for customer service, accuracy, quality, efficiency and all City and Library policies and procedures. 12. Represents the City professionally and effectively to the community and library patrons. QUALIFICATIONS: 1 Bachelor’s degree in library science or related field required, master’s degree in library science preferred. 2. Work experience in a library with increasing responsibility. Comprehensive knowledge of collection development for adults; experience selecting, and ordering library materials required. 4. Experience planning, coordinating, and conducting library programs and outreach for adults. 5. Demonstrated experience creating social media content to promote library programs and services. 6. Demonstrated success in interpersonal and communication skills. 7. Access to transportation with insurance at required state levels to conduct business throughout the assigned area. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: 1. Required to move or lift up to 25 pounds and occasionally up to 35 pounds. 2. Ability to sit for long periods of time and to maintain focus on projects such as computer screens or detailed paperwork. 3. Be able to effectively communicate orally (in person and over the telephone) and in writing (using electronic and handwritten) in English with other employees, library patrons, and the community. WORKING CONDITIONS: 1. Climate-controlled office with hazards typical of that environment, minimal outdoor work is required. 2. Standard work hours include evenings and weekends. 3. To successfully fulfill the essential functions of this position, employee must maintain standard work hours within the Waukee Public Library building.
