HomeMy WebLinkAboutLIB - Director of Library Services` Director of Library Services Page 1 Council Approved 06-07-2013 Board Approved 01-19-16, 11-10-16 Board Approved 05-08-18 Revised 12-21-20 Revised 10-2021 City of Waukee JOB DESCRIPTION Job Title: Director of Library Services Reports to: Library Board of Trustees Dept/Div: Library Direct Reports: Librarians: Senior, Adult, Youth, Patron Pay Grade: D4 Public, Digital Marketing Specialist, Public Services Associate FLSA Status: Exempt - Executive JOB PURPOSE: The Director of Library Services is responsible for all operations of the library, including services, collection, and staff. The Director manages, evaluates and improves the library in accordance with library policy and in close cooperation and communication with the Library Board of Trustees and the City of Waukee. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (Order of Essential Functions does not indicate importance of functions.) 1. Leads and directs the Waukee Public Library staff through selection, orientation, training, performance management and discipline according to standard operating procedures, City policy and department rules and regulations. 2. Develops and directs the Waukee Public Library policies, procedures, regulations, programs, systems, operations goals and objectives. 3. Oversees the financial aspects of the Waukee Public Library operations: accounting for department revenues, approving expenditures, keeping accurate inventory and preparing the annual CIP and budget request. 4. Assists with recruiting new Trustees and responsible for new Trustee orientation as well as providing continuing education opportunities for the Board. 5. Prepares and posts Board agendas in compliance with Iowa’s Open Meetings Laws. 6. Maintains positive public relations and library advocacy by participating in City Staff meetings, community organizations and activities as well as professional library organizations. 7. Responsible for maintaining the library’s State Accreditation. 8. Monitors physical facility and grounds insuring attractiveness and efficient operation and notifying proper individual of needed maintenance. 9. Performs other duties or assumes other responsibilities as apparent or assigned. SUCCESS FACTORS: 1. Contribute to overall City effectiveness by providing critical staff support to task forces and by participating, as necessary, in assisting all other teams. 7. Utilize high level of conflict resolution skills with staff, community members, elected officials and stakeholders. 8. Attentive to the City’s and the Library’s standards for customer service, accuracy, quality, efficiency and all City policies and procedures ensuring that all work performed and all staff members meet those standards while exhibiting consistent treatment of all staff. 9. Actively support all efforts to increase cooperation, communication, and collaboration between and among staff, library patrons and volunteers. 10. Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science from an American Library Association accredited university required. 2. A minimum of five (5) years of library experience desired. 3. Four (4) years of experience leading and developing staff and volunteers. 4. Must have (or be able to obtain within the first year) and maintain Iowa State Library Certification Level VI. 5. Demonstrated success in interpersonal and communication skills. 6. Successful experience in coaching staff and volunteers. 7. Be comfortable working in close proximity to all age categories. 8. Must demonstrate the ability to conduct a reference interview and be able to answer reference questions with authority and tenacity to meet patron needs. 9. A working knowledge of office equipment and administrative tasks is required. 10. Access to transportation with insurance at required state levels to conduct business throughout the assigned area. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: 1. Required to move or lift up to 25 pounds and occasionally up to 35 pounds. 2. Able to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of directors, staff, colleagues, elected officials and the general public. 3. Able to prepare and present accurate and reliable reports containing findings and recommendations. 4. Ability to sit for long periods of time and to maintain focus on projects such as computer screens or detailed paperwork. 5. Be able to effectively communicate orally (in person and over the telephone) and in writing (using electronic and handwritten) in English with other employees, library patrons, and the community. WORKING CONDITIONS: 1. Climate-controlled office with hazards typical of that environment, minimal outdoor work is required. 2. Standard work hours must be flexible and include occasional evenings and weekends. 3. Position requires travel within and outside of the City which imposes common travel hazards. 4. To successfully fulfill the essential functions of this position, employee must maintain standard work hours within Waukee Public Library building. 5. Must reside within 15 miles of the library.
