HomeMy WebLinkAboutLIB - Public Services Assistant 1 Public Services Assistant 1 Page 1 Library Board Approved 6-7-2013 Revised 10-2021, 4-2022, 7-2023, 2-2024 City of Waukee JOB DESCRIPTION Job Title: Public Services Assistant 1 Reports to: Assistant Director - Library Department: Library Direct Reports: None Pay Range: L11 FLSA Stats: Non-Exempt JOB PURPOSE: Performs all standard operations of shelving and organizing library materials, assists with patron circulation services. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (Order of Essential Functions does not indicate importance of functions.) 1. Sorts and shelves new and returned materials according to library procedure. 2. Locates materials in order to fill hold requests. 3. Assists with shift change procedures. 4. Assists patrons with locating library materials, using the library catalog, and library technology. 5. Assists with all circulation functions including check-in, check-out, placing holds and trace functions, collecting fines, using the patron database, patron registration, and issuing library cards. 6. Completes other duties or assumes other responsibilities as apparent or assigned. SUCCESS FACTORS: 1. Actively supports all efforts to increase cooperation, communication, and collaboration between and among staff, library patrons and volunteers. 2. Acknowledges and accepts the Library's mission, respects the Library's confidentiality regulations, and maintains the integrity of the Waukee Public Library. 3. Maintains knowledge of current holdings and library resources, both print and electronic. 4. Seeks to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of all library operations with positive and creative approaches to challenges. 5. Demonstrated success in interpersonal and communication skills. 6. Ability to operate standard office equipment, perform required data entry proficiently and use library software and computer systems effectively. 7. Comfortable working in close proximity to all age categories. 8. Demonstrates sound time-management skills by effectively and efficiently organizing, prioritizing, and completing multiple assignments in a timely manner. 9. Understand and internalize the importance of seeking resolution to problems and concerns by bringing them to the direct attention of supervisor in a timely manner. 10. Be attentive to the City's and the Library's standards for customer service, accuracy, efficiency and all City and Library policies and procedures. 11. Represents the City professionally and effectively to the community and library patrons. QUALIFICATIONS 1. High school diploma or general educational development (GED), or currently in pursuit thereof. 2. Must be 16 years of age or older. 3. Library or related customer service experience preferred. Required to move or lift up to 25 pounds and occasionally up to 35 pounds. 2. Ability to push and pull up to 50 pounds 3. Constant reaching, handling, dexterity, near sight acuity, and concentration. 4. Frequent climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crawling, depth perception, field of vision and judgement. 5. Ability to effectively communicate orally (in person and over the telephone) and in writing (using electronic and handwritten) in English with other employees, library patrons, and the community. WORKING CONDITIONS: 1. Climate-controlled office with hazards typical of that environment, minimal outdoor work is required. 2. Standard work hours include evenings and weekends.
