JOB DESCRIPTION
Job Title: Youth Services Manager
Department: Library
Pay Range: L36
FLSA Status: Exempt
Reports to: Library Director
Direct Reports: Children's Librarian, Children's
Programming Outreach Specialist, Youth Programming
Specialist, Summer Reading Program Assistants,
occasionally other library staff, and volunteers
JOB PURPOSE: The Youth Services Manager leads the Youth Services Department operations, staff, and activities
relating to programming, library materials selection, and outreach to children, teens, parents,
caregivers, and educators.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Manages the Youth Services Department. Plans, organizes, and implements services, programs, and
materials for youth, educators, parents, and caregivers, to instill a lifelong love of reading and learning.
2. Serves on the Library Management Team. Administers department procedures and policies to implement
library goals and objectives and meets the needs of library patrons. Responsible for hiring, training, evaluating,
and encouraging development of direct reports.
3. Maintains an attractive and functional youth area including youth promotional materials and displays.
4. Researches, evaluates, and manages the youth collection by reviewing, selecting, ordering, weeding, and
maintaining all Youth Services materials.
5. Performs professional support service for patrons by undertaking difficult and complex reference
searches and offering reader's advisory.
6. Provides outreach to schools, childcare centers, and other organizations to promote the library and its services.
7. Coordinates and trains teen volunteers.
8. Collaborates with Director about the direction and scope of youth programming and keeps Director informed
about Youth Services Department activities.
9. Develops youth-oriented content for website and social media outlets.
10. Evaluates and suggests annual department budget; manage and comply with budget allotment.
11. Participates in state, regional, and national library associations relating to youth services.
12. Compiles statistics and reports as directed.
13. Performs duties of the Director when assigned.
14. Completes other duties or assumes other responsibilities as apparent or assigned.

4. Demonstrates sound time-management skills by effectively and efficiently organizing, prioritizing,
and completing multiple assignments in a timely manner.

5. Has a professional understanding of librarianship including child growth and development.
6. Comfortable working in close proximity to all age categories.
7. Working knowledge of electronic services, Internet tools, social media and library related
technology and trends, and the ability to embrace the challenge of continuously learning new tools,
software, and technology to meet typical library needs.
8. Acknowledges and accepts the Library's mission, respects the Library's confidentiality regulations,
and maintains the integrity of the Waukee Public Library.
9. Continually seeks and participates in opportunities for continuing education and professional growth.
10. Maintains knowledge of current holdings and library resources, both print and electronic.
11. Be attentive to the City's and the Library's standards for customer service, accuracy, efficiency and all City and
Library policies and procedures.
12. Represents the City professionally and effectively to the community and library patrons.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Master’s degree in in library & information science, early childhood development or a related filed
required.
2. Previous experience working with youth in a youth services department of a public library.
3. Supervisory experience required.
4. Demonstrated comprehensive knowledge related to youth literature, media, popular culture,
educational and technology trends in addition to showing the initiative to continually develop
knowledge in these areas.
5. Demonstrated success in interpersonal and communication skills.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
1. Required to move or lift up to 25 pounds and occasionally up to 35 pounds.
2. Ability to sit for long periods of time and to maintain focus on projects such as computer screens or
detailed paperwork.
3. Be able to effectively communicate orally (in person and over the telephone) and in writing (using
electronic and handwritten) in English with other employees, library patrons, and the community.
4. Access to transportation with insurance at required state levels to conduct business throughout the assigned
area.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
1. Climate-controlled office with hazards typical of that environment, minimal outdoor work is required.
2. Standard work hours include evenings and weekends.
3. To successfully fulfill the essential functions of this position, employee must maintain standard work hours
within the Waukee Public Library building.
