Director Dept/Div: Parks & Recreation/Parks Direct Reports: Parks Laborers, Seasonal Union Status: Represented-CWA FLSA Status: Non -Exempt Pay Grade: GS-16 JOB PURPOSE: The Parks Superintendent performs supervisory and maintenance work necessary for the operation of parkland, park facilities and bike trails. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (Order of Essential Functions does not indicate importance of functions.) 1. Leads the Parks Division staff through hiring, promotion, orientation, training, assigning and directing, performance management (reward, discipline, suspension and discharge) according to standard operating procedures, City policy and departmental rules and regulations. 2. Oversees the scheduling and routing of personnel and equipment to accomplish maintenance goals. 3. Assists in construction, maintenance and repair of park facilities; operates backhoe, grader, end loader, mowers, boom truck, dump trucks, and other department equipment; performs mowing, cutting of brush. Landscape maintenance, watering, weed eating and trash pick-up. 4. Observes and participates in project work and makes decisions as to quality of work and whether it meets departmental standards. 5. Performs all duties of a Parks Laborer. 6. Encourages and promotes compliance with safety rules and the use of safety equipment. 7. Reports any damages or broken safety or mechanical equipment, vandalism to the appropriate supervisor. 8. Assists with snow removal at City locations as assigned. 9. Responds to emergency and on -call situations in a timely manner. 10. Performs other duties or assumes other responsibilities as apparent or assigned. SUCCESS FACTORS: 1. QUALIFICATIONS: 1. High School diploma or GED required. 2. Minimum of three years' successful experience in a similar position. 3. Minimum of three years' successful experience leading staff. 4. Must possess a valid Class B Iowa Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with air brake endorsements or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire and meet the requirements of the City's motor vehicle policy. Able to regularly lift, carry, push and pull up to 50 pounds and frequently lift and/or move more than 100 pounds. 2. Able to spend majority of work related time outdoors. 3. Able to maneuver in undeveloped areas on uneven surfaces for up to one mile in various types of weather. 4. Able to walk and stand for long periods of time on different surfaces including walkways, trails, stairs and undeveloped areas. 5. Able to climb different types of ladders and stairs. 6. Must be able to effectively communicate orally (in person and over the telephone) and in writing (using electronic devices and handwritten) in English with other employees, businesses and community members. WORKING CONDITIONS: 1. Standard work hours will be Monday — Friday, 7:00 AM — 3:30 PM. 2. Subject to on -call duties. 3. Willing to work long hours if necessary to meet the expectations of the job description. 4. During summer months outside temperatures can be over 100 degrees for entire scheduled work day. 5. During winter months outside temperatures can be below zero for entire scheduled work day. 6. May be exposed daily to odors, dusts and gasses that may be uncomfortable or hazardous if proper procedures are not followed. 7. The employee in this position is required to reside within a 30 minute radius of the City limits due to the need to respond to emergency calls in a timely manner to protect the health, safety and welfare of the citizens of Waukee. 8. To successfully fulfill the essential functions of this position, employee must maintain standard work hours within Waukee Public Works Building.
