JOB DESCRIPTION
Job Title: Recreation Supervisor Reports to: Assistant Parks & Recreation Director
Dept/Div: Parks & Recreation/Recreation Direct Reports: Rec Lead, Rec Program Assistants,
Pay Grade: N31 Intern, Community Center Site
FLSA Status: Exempt – Executive Supervisor, Seasonal staff, volunteers
JOB PURPOSE: The Recreation Supervisor plans, directs, and coordinates comprehensive recreational and
leisure programs, events and facilities within the City of Waukee.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Arranges, attends, and supervises department’s recreational programs, including youth and adult sports,
programs, activities, and other special events.
2. Leads and directs staff and volunteers through selection, orientation, training, performance management
and discipline according to standard operating procedures and City policy.
3. Manages daily operations and staff at City’s recreational facilities as assigned.
4. Works closely with representatives in the community in developing and implementing recreational
opportunities.
5. Conducts program evaluations to determine feasibility, participation level, and quality of each program and
event.
6. Attends and participates in various City and civic meetings; attends seminars, workshops, and clinics to
provide for professional development.
7. Conducts regular checks of all facilities, activities, and program sites to monitor and assist staff with
problems.
8. Serves as a mentor to the Recreation Coordinator.
9. Prepares and distributes departmental press releases, newsletters, and informational brochures.
10. Prepares and submits required reports, including monthly and annual activity reports, budget reviews, and
monthly expenditures.
11. Performs other duties or assumes other responsibilities as apparent or assigned.

consistent treatment of all staff.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Bachelor’s Degree in Recreation, Leisure Studies, or a related field.
2. Three (3) years increasingly responsible related experience preferred.

3. Must possess a valid Iowa Driver’s License within 30 days and meet the requirements of the City’s motor
vehicle policy.
4. Current CPR and First Aid certifications or ability to obtain within 60 days of hire.
5. Be comfortable working in close proximity to all age categories.
6. Knowledge of the principles and practices associated with modern recreation planning and leisure activities
including safety precautions associated with recreational activities.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
1. Able to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of directors, staff, colleagues,
elected officials and the general public.
2. Able to function productively in a standard office environment accessing cabinets, shelving, work areas and
office equipment.
3. Able to sit for long periods of time and to maintain focus on project such as computer screen.
4. Be responsive to visual and verbal alarms and other indications of distress.
5. Must be able to effectively communicate orally (in person and over the telephone) and in writing (using
electronic devices and handwritten) in English with other employees, businesses and community members.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
1. Climate controlled office with hazards typical to that environment.
2. Position requires outdoor work where heat, cold, precipitation, and the results of weather and nature may
be encountered.
3. Position requires travel within and outside of the City, which imposes common travel hazards.
4. Standard work hours must be flexible and include evenings and weekends and will be greater than 40
hours per week for a large percentage of the year.
5. To successfully fulfill the essential functions of this position, employee must maintain standard work hours
within the Waukee Public Works building.
6. The employee in this position is required to reside within a 30-minute radius of the City limits due to the
need to respond to emergency calls in a timely manner to protect the health, safety and welfare of the
citizens of Waukee.
