HomeMy WebLinkAboutPW - Streets LaborerStreets Laborer Page 1 Council Approved 2011 Revised 04-03-18, 8-13-2019, 10-2021, 7-2023 City of Waukee JOB DESCRIPTION Job Title: Streets Laborer Reports to: Streets Superintendent Dept/Div: Public Works/Streets Direct Reports: None Grade: N23 FLSA Status: Non-Exempt JOB PURPOSE: The Streets Laborer assists in the maintenance and repair of City streets, street lights, traffic signals, curbs, sidewalks and right-of-ways to ensure safe and reliable passageways for the citizens of Waukee and the general public. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (Order of Essential Functions does not indicate importance of functions.) 1. Maintains City roads and streets making repairs using concrete and/or asphalt. 2. Maintains gravel roads and shoulders by grading, adding rock, and conducting edge rut spreading. 3. Repairs and replaces curbs, gutters, and sidewalks, including the building and setting of forms, pouring and finishing concrete, and repairing potholes, manholes, storm sewers, and catch basins. 4. Plows snow, sands and salts during regular business hours and after hours during snow emergencies. 5. Drives trucks equipped with dump body, tanks and peripheral equipment to transport materials related to the job. 6. Operates, services, and maintains related public works equipment. 7. Inspects, maintains, repairs and installs storm sewers, ditches, and right-of-ways. 8. Inspects and repairs signs, streetlights and traffic signals. 9. Responds to emergency and on-call situations for any public works division in a timely manner. 10. Performs other duties or assumes other responsibilities as apparent or assigned. SUCCESS FACTORS: 1. Attentive to the City’s and Public Works’ standards for customer service, accuracy, quality, efficiency and all city and department policies and procedures. QUALIFICATIONS: 1. High School diploma required; Associate’s Degree or technical training preferred. 2. Confident in the use of computers and tablets and able to be trained in software required to complete the functions of the position. 3. Must possess a valid Class A Iowa Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with air brake endorsements or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire and meet the requirements of the City’s motor vehicle policy. Able to regularly lift, carry, push and pull up to 50 pounds and frequently lift and/or move more than 75 pounds. 2. Able to move objects weighing over 100 pounds using assistive devices multiple times during the day. 3. Able to climb different types of ladders and stairs. 4. Able to enter and work in confined space with proper training and personal protective equipment (PPEs). 5. Able to maneuver in undeveloped areas on uneven surfaces for up to one mile in various types of weather. 6. Must be able to effectively communicate orally (in person and over the telephone) and in writing (using electronic devices and handwritten) in English with other employees, businesses and community members. WORKING CONDITIONS: 1. Position requires outdoor work where heat, cold, precipitation, and the results of weather and nature will be encountered. 2. Subject to on-call duties and emergency call-ins. 3. May be exposed daily to odors, dusts and gasses that may be uncomfortable or hazardous if proper procedures are not followed. 4. During different job duties the noise inside or outside can become very loud. 5. Position requires travel within and outside of the City, which imposes common travel hazards. 6. Standard work hours are 7:00 am – 3:30 pm and will include weekends and evenings as required. 7. To successfully fulfill the essential functions of this position, employee must maintain standard work hours within Waukee Public Works department. 8. The employee in this position is required to reside within a 30 minute radius of the City limits due to the need to respond to emergency calls in a timely manner to protect the health, safety and welfare of the citizens of Waukee.
