JOB DESCRIPTION
Job Title: Utility Locator Reports to: Asst. PW Dir. - Operations
Dept/Div: Public Works/Operations Direct Reports: None
Grade: N23 FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
JOB PURPOSE: The Utility Locator is responsible for locating water mains, service lines, stop boxes, gas
mains, electric lines, traffic signals, fiber optic lines, and street lights to ensure that
contractors and citizens have knowledge of these underground items prior to digging.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Locates water, gas, and sewer mains, service lines, stop boxes, electric lines, traffic signals, fiber optic
lines, and street lights for protection of underground facilities.
2. Maintains locate request records.
3. Resolves customer complaints that pertain to locating problems.
4. Resolve after hours emergency locates.
5. Operates dump truck, locator and other equipment.
6. Responds to emergency and on-call situations for any Public Works Division in a timely manner.
7. Plows snow during regular business hours and after hours during snow emergencies.
8. Works with and assists other departments and performs other related duties as required.
9. Performs other duties or assumes other responsibilities as apparent or assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:
1. High School Diploma required; Associate's Degree or technical training preferred.
2. Confident in the use of computers and tablets and able to be trained in software required to complete the
functions of the position.
3. Able to read various maps, plats, and construction plans.
4. Able to use and operate electronic mapping systems and record keeping and various electronic devices.

5. Must possess a valid Class B Iowa Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with air brake endorsements or
ability to obtain within 6 months of hire and meet the requirements of the City's motor vehicle policy
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
1. Able to walk and stand for long periods of time on different surfaces including walkways, trails, stairs and
undeveloped areas.
2. Able to lift, carry, push and pull up to 75 pounds.
3. Able to move objects weighing over 100 pounds using assistive devices multiple times during the day.
4. Able to climb different types of ladders and stairs.
5. Able to enter and work in confined space with proper training and personal protective equipment (PPEs).
6. Able to spend majority of work related time outdoors.
7. Able to maneuver in undeveloped areas on uneven surfaces for up to one mile in various types of weather.
8. Must be able to effectively communicate orally (in person and over the telephone) and in writing (using
electronic devices and handwritten) in English with other employees, businesses and community members.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
1. Position requires outdoor work where heat, cold, precipitation, and the results of weather and nature will be
encountered.
2. Subject to on-call duties and emergency call-ins.
3. May be exposed daily to odors, dusts and gasses that may be uncomfortable or hazardous if
proper procedures are not followed.
4. During different job duties the noise inside or outside can become very loud.
5. Position requires travel within and outside of the City which imposes common travel hazards.
6. Standard work hours are 7:00 - 3:30 pm and will include weekends and evenings as required.
7. Willing to work long hours if necessary to meet the expectation of the job.
8. To successfully fulfill the essential functions of this position, employee must maintain standard work
hours within Waukee Public Works Department.
9. The employee in this position is required to reside within a 30 minute radius of the City limits due to
the need to respond to emergency calls in a timely manner to protect the health, safety and welfare of
the citizens of Waukee.
