JOB DESCRIPTION
Job Title: Senior Accountant Reports to: Accounting Manager
Dept/Div: Finance Direct Reports: None
Union Status: Non-Represented FLSA Status: Exempt – Executive
Pay Grade: N29
JOB PURPOSE: The Senior Accountant will perform technical level accounting, forecasting, auditing, and
reporting processes specifically related to governmental accounting.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Assists with external annual audit preparation and reports recommending and implementing internal audit
procedures.
2. Assists with coordination of annual operating budget, CIP budget and budget amendment processes while
providing budget estimates, calculations, and projections to various departments.
3. Assists with development and publication of budget documents in accordance with national standards
established by Government Finance Officers Association’s Distinguished Budget Award Program.
4. Manages the City’s fixed asset report for annual audit, budget and insurance purposes assisting with
creation and monitoring of Vehicle and Equipment Replacement Schedules while verifying asset
disposition request information.
5. Coordinates and assists with Capital Improvement Project (CIP) budget preparation including CIP planning
reviews and project tracking.
6. Assists with preparing annual ACFR, Street Finance Report, Annual State Financial Report, Annual TIF
Certification Report, Annual Budget Certification, and Budget Amendment.
7. Prepares and issue annual vendor 1099’s, serve as backup to Payroll Specialist, purchasing contract
reviews, and monthly journal entries as needed.
8. Performs other duties or assumes other responsibilities as apparent or assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Financial Management or related field, plus two (2) years related work
experience. Equivalent work experience may be substituted in lieu of Bachelor’s Degree. Public sector
experience preferred.

2. Knowledge of municipal, state, and federal codes, laws and ordinances as related to finance and generally
accepted accounting principles.
3. Experience with governmental, fixed asset and capital project accounting processes preferred.
4. Ability to analyze accounts and transactions for discrepancies and effect on financial reports.
5. Ability to compile information and to prepare reports.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
1. Able to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 10 pounds occasionally.
2. Able to function productively in a standard office environment accessing cabinets, shelving, work areas and
office equipment.
3. Able to sit for long periods of time and to maintain focus on project such as computer screen.
4. Able to effectively communicate orally (in person and over the telephone) and in writing (using electronic
devices and handwritten) in English with other employees and the community.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
1. Climate controlled office with hazards typical to that environment.
2. Position requires travel within and outside of the City which imposes common travel hazards.
3. Standard work hours would be Monday – Friday 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM with additional evening and weekend
hours as required.
4. To successfully fulfill the essential functions of this position, employee must maintain standard work hours
within Waukee City Hall.
5. There is no residency requirement for this position.
