RESOLUTION 07-96
RESOLUTION OF SUPPORT FOR THE IOWA DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL
RESOURCES "PROJECT A.W.A.R.E."
IN THE NAME AND BY THE AUTHORITY OF THE CITY OF WAUKEE,IOWA
WHEREAS,the Raccoon River Watershed is a major natural resource for the Central Iowa
Region,providing habitat for a great many birds,mammals,fish and other species;AND
WHEREAS,the North Raccoon,Middle Raccoon and South Raccoon provide for residents to
get outdoors and enjoy a canoe,kayak or float with the opportunity to view wildlife;AND
WHEREAS,the water within the Raccoon River system provides for outstanding fishing within
the greater Des Moines region;AND
WHEREAS,the water from the Raccoon River system is used by Des Moines Water Works for
the water needs of the entire central Iowa region;AND
WHERAS,the Iowa Department of Natural Resources will be conducting "Project A.W.A.R.E."
on the Raccoon River on June 16-23,2007.This program is a week-long,lID-mile river cleanup
on the Middle and North Raccoon Rivers;AND
WHEREAS,"Project A.W.A.R.E."is a unique opportunity to engage volunteers in a service
learning project that produces tangible results and increases awareness to Iowa's water quality
issues that threaten the health ofIowa's water resources;AND
WHEREAS,the month of June is National Rivers Month;
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Waukee on this,
the 21"day of May,that it hereby adopts a resolution supporting "Project A.W.A.R.E."and
further encourages Waukee citizens to connect with their rivers,understand their watersheds and
make a difference in the cornnrunity.
