RESOLUTION 07-231
SUPPORTING AN APPLICATION BY THE DALLAS COUNTY CONSERVATION
BOARD IN APPLYING FOR A COMMUNITY ATTRACTION AND TOURISM GRANT
FROM THE IOWA DEPARTMENT OF ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT FOR THE
RACCOON RIVER V ALLEY TRAIL EXTENSION
IN THE NAME AND BY THE AUTHORITY OF THE CITY OF WAUKEE,IOWA
WHEREAS,the first section ofthe Raccoon River Valley Trail (RRVT)opened on October 7,
1989,with a 34-mile route completed in 1990 from Waukee to Yale;AND,
WHEREAS,a 12-mile addition from Jefferson south to Herndon was completed in 1997;AND,
WHEREAS,in 1999,a five-mile extension was completed east from Waukee to connect with
the Greenbelt Trail in the Des Moines suburb of Clive,and another five miles of trail was
completed to link Herndon and Yale to northern Guthrie County;AND,
WHEREAS,the proposed route on which a 33-mile "north loop"of the RRVT will run
northwest from Waukee through Dallas Center and Minburn to Perry,then swings west through
Dawson and Jamaica before it intersects again with the RRVT in the unincorporated town of
Herndon;AND,
WHEREAS,in recent years,the Conservation Board directors have estimated that 70,000
people per year are using the RR VT and with the new connection into the metro trail system that
is now being completed in Des Moines,as well as the new north loop on the RRVT,the number
of users is expected to mushroom in the years ahead;AND,
WHEREAS,the RRVT is part of the American Discovery Trail System (ADT),which is the
first coast-to-coast,non-motorized,multi-use train that stretches acTOSS6,800 miles and IS states
and links communities,cities,parks and wilderness;AND,
WHEREAS,after reviewing the concept of the "north loop"of the RRVT,the Waukee City
Council is in support of a grant application by the Dallas County Conservation Board for
Community Attraction and Tourism funds to help support the development of the RRVT
extension;
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Waukee,Iowa on
this 5th day of November 2007 that it supports the Dallas County Conservation Board application
for Community Attraction and Tourism grant funds from the Iowa Department of Economic
Development.
